St. Michael Catholic Church
Located at 177 1st St, Biloxi, MS 39530, United States, St. Michael Catholic Church is best known as the “Fisherman’s Church”. The church was originally established in 1917 & fascinates visitors by its unusual cylindrical shape.
The scalloped shell roof is a 2.5-ton alter cover in the Holy Land, with a bronzed crucifix dangling above it, seeming as if suspended in mid-air, & the stained-glass windows portraying figures of the twelve apostles gathering in their catch, all these features miles will leave you with an all inspiring feeling! As a member of this community, we are glad to share these features with you.
History Of St. Michael’s
St. Michael’s started as a small mission under the auspices of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in 1908. Initially called Our Lady of Good Counsel, later in 1917, it was renamed St. Michael’s when it became a parish.
The fishing families of Point Cadet raised funds in order to build this church.
It was designed by architect James T. Canizaro & dedicated in the year 1964, St. Michael’s is popularly known as the “Fishermen’s Church.” The theme is achieved by the scalloped seashell-shaped roof, the stained-glass windows, & the repeated motif of fish, water, & nets around the church.
