Deer Island is an uninhabited island ¼ mile off the coast of Biloxi, Mississippi. Approximately 400 acres, the island is not a barrier island but was once part of the mainland.
American Indians were the first to settle on Deer Island, followed by Europeans in 1717. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the island was used for fishing and farming, and it even hosted an amusement park in 1915. After Hurricane Camille in1969, the island’s residents left.
Deer Island is one of Mississippi’s twenty Coastal Preserves and is home to ten types of endangered species that include loggerhead sea turtles which are in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services.
The island is a secluded location with clear water, breathtaking views, and close encounters with wildlife.
Deer Island is made up of miles of undisturbed sandy beaches and it is easily accessible due to a boat pier added to the north side of the island. You can easily explore it if you have access to a small boat, kayak, canoe, or paddleboard.
Deer Island is open to all and sundry and they have two simple guidelines. They are:
– Bonfires should be lit close to the water and not near the trees on the island.
– Visitors should clean up after themselves and not litter the island.
